Mind you, there are no longer many side stories to discover. There's no longer the slightest incentive to plan, to attend to and intercept the side stories tunnelling through the landscape. It's a change for the better if you like to clear out an open world in a single playthrough, but the trade-off is that actions feel less consequential.
